Irregular verbs

English has many common verbs in which the past tense is irregular. Regular forms end in -ed:

  • I walk to work every day. [present tense]

  • I walked to the shops yesterday but they were closed. [past simple]

  • We had walked for a couple of hours before we arrived at the cottage. [past participle] [past simple]

However, irregular verbs are verbs that do not follow this regular ‑ed pattern. Their past tense or past participle (or both) have special forms.
