Assessing writing skills

Writing is more than word order: clear writing relies on several techniques:

• word choice | the words we use need to fit the context
• consistency | style and structure are similar throughout the text
• cohesion | everything fits together
• coherence | ideas naturally flow with the writer clearly guiding the reader
• balance | structures are evenly weighted

Quality writing is a skill which can be learnt with clarity and comprehension the end result.

The purpose of the below task is to establish how we can improve our writing. By understanding our weaknesses and strengths, improving becomes more effective.

WHAT IS YOUR OPINION?

Which person (or sort of person) in the past would you most like to interview, and why?

To help you answer, here are some hints:

• this is not a right/ wrong type question
  
• what sort of issues do you want to find out about
  
• would you like to interview someone famous or unknown, and why
  
• if you want to find out more information, would you ask their friends, colleagues or someone else
  
• would the person you select be willing or able to reveal the information you want
• is there anything we can learn from them
  

Note

This assessment is designed to evaluate writing:

• decide if you are writing informally or formally
  
• avoid general statements which add no extra information
  


• use your own experience
  
• write approximately 400 words
