The 3rd Conditional
Structure: [if + past perfect] + [would have + past participle]
Use: To imagine how things could have been different. If something had been different, something else would have happened. Both the condition and the result are impossible now.
The scenario:

Fred walks over and asks 'Is Mary in the finance meeting? What time does it finish?' Fred walks away and another colleague asks what Fred said.
