Business Writing Skills
Show you mean business! Whether pen, keyboard or presentation, what you write speaks volumes.

You are judged not only on what you say and how you say it, but what you write and how you express it.
Our innovative course has been designed for those who require flexibility. Studies consist of guided independent study and research, making use of online practice elements to produce written tasks.

Nevertheless you are not alone. You have a mentor for support should you have any questions.
Content
We look at the following:

  • how to make writing effective
  • giving examples with variety
  • using clauses to give reason, purpose and show result
  • understanding where to place important information and how to create sentence flow
  • understanding what makes clear English and recognising what prevents us from writing clearly
  • understanding what prevents us from writing clearly
Objective
  • state your point confidently and clearly
  • provide supportive arguments and examples
  • create a text which flows from sentence to sentence, and paragraph through paragraph
  • understand common writing flaws and how to avoid
Learning and assessment

Core knowledge and course material is provided through this website:

  • explore our online pages which explain and illustrate best writing practices
  • practise with online quizzes
  • submit writing examples for appraisal

Quizzes and writing exercises are designed to build on course material:

  • quizzes reaffirm foundational material
  • assessed writing helps you improve style, structure and vocabulary choice

Appraised work may be submitted twice, allowing you to learn from comments made.
Length

As this course is flexible, you decide how to spend your time. You should expect to spend at least:

  • 30 hours

A substantial amount of time should be spent practising, both with quizzes and through writing exercises.
Language level

  • B2 First
  • FCE [Cambridge English: First]
  • IELTS 5.5-6.5

NOTE
Many companies, universities, government agencies, and research institutions require an IELTS score of 7.0 or higher (with a stated average for each category).
