Based on the Mastering Formal and Academic Writing - Foundation Course:

  • what is formal writing and what are its defining features
  • what is nominalisation and why we use it
  • the art of cautious language or hedging
  • efficient writing with participle clauses
  • using register and the right tone
  • using clauses for purpose, reason & result
  • tautology & verbosity
  • arranging information to give impact and providing flow
  • understanding and improving writing style

The course then expands to advance your writing skills with:

  • how to develop a cohesive and coherent text
  • how to write writing efficiently
  • how to write concisely and with precision

Quizzes and writing exercises are designed to build on course material:

Appraised work may be submitted twice, allowing you to learn from comments made.
Length

As this course is flexible, you decide how to spend your time. You should expect to spend at least:

  • 80 hours

A substantial amount of time should be spent practising, both with quizzes and through writing exercises.
