Phrasal verbs

A special type of verb

Phrasal verbs are integral to both spoken and written English. Learning to use phrasal verbs may be challenging because the verb may not be related to its meaning.

Initially, focus on meaning: understand how they are used so you can prepare your response. As you become confident, you will naturally incorporate them into your conversation.

  • expressions

  • phrases

Definitions are given to help you understand the story.

Questions

  1. Select five phrasal verbs and create a sentence for each phrasal verb.

  2. Select five expressions or phrases from the expressions, phrases and vocabulary section and create sentences (you can create a separate sentence for each one or incorporate several into one sentence).

  3. Rewrite the following paragraph without the phrasal verbs while encapsulating their meaning:

As Percy was thinking through his menu ideas, he put aside any doubts that came to him and decided if things were to fail he would have to have a backup plan. Maybe something totally fail-safe. He couldn't think what, at this stage, but the thought nevertheless comforted him. He was sure everyone would get along regardless and they would just put up with any mishaps as part of the evening. The thought cheered him up and he got on with the planning.
