This course focuses on developing a deeper understanding of different texts and improving your speaking abilities in professional and informal settings, helping you communicate more effectively in different situations.

  • Listening

    Did he say there’s a hippo wearing a tutu? Really? Sometimes what you hear is not what was said. Let’s change that!

    We use real-life short videos to train your ear: matching sounds to words. Additionally, questions help you focus on detail and meaning, strengthening your listening skills.

  • Reading

    Many words can be overwhelming. Sometimes we need guidance to navigate the mass of words, helping you make sense of the verbal jungle in front you.

    We guide you through various articles, reading for both gist and detail, looking at sentence structures, vocabulary and verb forms.

  • Speaking

    Speaking with your mentor, over a range of subjects, allows you to practise comprehension, word use and pronunciation.

    Additionally, you will practise sentence and question structures, helping you can express your ideas and thoughts.

  • Writing

    We want our message to be understood and we want our words to say what we mean.

    For each writing piece, we assess it for word use, sentence structure and, of course, grammar. We also advise you on its clarity, cohesion and flow.

Who is this course for?

This course has been designed for those who:

  • wish to improve their core English communication skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing.

  • require flexibility: you decide how much time you are able to invest each week.

  • need a mentor to provide guidance and advice, whether it’s for grammar, word use or sentence rephrasing.

  • would benefit from assessed tasks with comments and examples on how to improve and strengthen writing.

    1. One hour online meeting.

    2. Listening (in your own time): expect to spend between 30-60 minutes.

    3. Reading (in your own time): expect to spend between 30-60 minutes.

    4. Writing (in your own time): expect to spend about 60 to 90 minutes.

    Expect to invest about 5 hours a week.

  • The course takes place over 8 weeks, with one online scheduled meeting per week.

    You should expect to invest:

    • 8 online meetings

    • approximately 32 hours self-study

    • approximately 40 hours in total

    The total time will depend how much is spent on the listening, reading and writing exercises.

  • Currently, courses are online only.

  • The Essential English course has 8 meetings; however, these can be extended.

  • Each online meeting is designed for conversation practice. If there is something you wish to discuss, just ask!

    Listening, reading and writing exercises are completed in your own time.

  • Videos are short with either a transcript or subtitles. Questions are designed to help you focus on details; answers are available.

    Videos are chosen for subject variety and accent type.

  • Articles on a variety of subjects are presented with line numbers, helping you identify words, phrases and expression which may be unfamiliar.

    Questions, and answers, help focus on details.

  • Each writing task has a presentation illustrating what is expected.

    Once you have submitted your writing, it is assessed for grammar, logical, word use and many other parameters. This is designed to identify weaknesses and strengths, helping you improve your message.
